This is a guest post from Dustin Harris, The Appraiser Coach. We’re sponsoring his new podcast for appraisers. Check it out here and look for his upcoming interview with our expert instructor, Paul Stansberry.

“What is a podcast?” I get that question all the time. It is a bit surprising as a recent study concluded that 15% of adults in the U.S. listened to at least one podcast in the past month, but you do not know what you do not know. Though the name might imply something from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a podcast is simply an audio show that can be downloaded on your computer or smartphone. It is similar to a radio program, but is not live and can be enjoyed at the listener’s convenience.

iTunes (for Apple users) is the most popular podcast format, but Android users can use Stitcher Radio or PC users can usually download directly from the host’s website. Personally, I am a huge fan of podcasts. Between business, educational, and even religion themed shows, I average between 15 and 20 hours of podcast listening per week. Where do I find the time? That is the great thing about podcasts; they can be listened to while I do other things (driving, appraisal write ups, or chores around the house). These young whippersnappers call that “multi-tasking.” I always have my smartphone with me and it is rare to find me without ear buds giving me the latest news, information, or entertainment in the form of podcasts.

An appraiser’s lifestyle is perfect for podcast delivery which is why I have decided to take the educational and informational side of what I do to the podcasting world. The Appraiser Coach Podcast brings you information about the appraisal profession in a conversational style. My goal is to bring you the news of the day, but our main focus is more effective appraisal business management, which will allow you to run a more efficient appraisal office and make more money! Each week, I hit the topics that are on your mind and do so with stimulating conversation and interviews from the top appraisal industry leaders. Of course, we have fun while we do it as well.

Broadcast radio is okay. I have listened to my share of political talk and news shows in my day, but the subject matter is expansive and not really related to my day-to-day. Podcasting is sometimes called “narrow-casting” as it pertains to what you are really interested in. It is specific as topics are only in the niche you are interested in.

Podcasts are not radio and should not be confused as such. The format for podcasting is much more flexible. For example, we do not have set time restraints. A typical podcast can run 15 minutes or over an hour. We say what needs to be said and then we are done. Secondly, the professional, DJ sounding voice you might get on a radio show is not my style. Rather, the Appraiser Coach Podcast is more akin to you and I having a conversation about appraising on our back deck with a lemonade in hand (lemonade not included). Realistic, down-to-earth discussions are what I am going for here. Finally, much of the show’s content is driven by you, the listener. I keep my ear to the ground as it were and we talk about what is hot in your mind (at least as it relates to appraisal—let’s not get carried away here).

What is the best thing about podcasts? They are FREE! That’s right; there is no cost to you, the listener. You can listen when and where you want. You can go back and listen to old episodes or even skip ahead if the topic for that week is not pertinent to you. Subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher Radio and each new episode is automatically downloaded to your smartphone and deleted once you are done listening. Easy.

Before I discovered the world of podcasts, I got tired of those long afternoons in the office staring at a computer screen or commuting to and from my appraisal appointments with nothing stimulating to listen to. I invite you to give the Appraiser Coach Podcast a try. Get the latest industry news and information. Learn how to streamline your appraisal office. Hear from top leaders in our profession, and be entertained at the same time. You will be glad you did.
